Where the money should go
Cut first: an Excellent or Ideal cut diamond outshines a bigger, duller one. Then balance carat against color (G–H is the value zone) and clarity (VS2–SI1 is usually eye-clean). Lab-grown stones move every number in your favor if origin story matters less to you than size.
Settings range from a few hundred dollars for a solitaire to a few thousand for elaborate halos — a good rule is 15–25% of total budget on the setting.
The practical checklist
Certified stone (GIA/IGI/GCAL) with the report number laser-inscribed. Ring size (borrow a ring or use our free sizer). Return window and resize policy in writing. Insurance quote before it ships — typically 1–2% of value per year. And a proposal plan that doesn't leave the ring in checked luggage.
