What are Akoya pearls?+
Akoya are saltwater cultured pearls, primarily from Japan, considered the classic white pearl — rounder and sharper in luster than freshwater pearls. Most fine pearl strands and studs you picture are Akoya.
How can you tell real pearls from fake ones?+
Rub a pearl gently against your tooth: real nacre feels slightly gritty, imitation glass or plastic feels smooth. Real pearls also vary minutely from one to the next, show depth in their luster, and feel cool on first touch.
