Color grading measures the absence of color: D is ice-white, K is faintly warm. The scale's secret is that adjacent grades are indistinguishable outside a lab — and even three grades apart is subtle once a stone is set.
Choosing by setting
Platinum or white gold: G–H faces up colorless at a fraction of D–F pricing. Yellow or rose gold: I–K disappears into the metal's warmth — spend the savings on carat. Side-by-side comparison shopping is the only time D–F premiums earn their keep.
Shape matters
Brilliant cuts (round, oval, cushion) mask color; step cuts (emerald, Asscher) reveal it. Go one grade higher for step cuts, one lower for brilliant cuts in warm metal.
